5.0 out of 5 stars Love my Vita-Mix!, August 9, 2009

I have had my platinum Vita-Mix 1363 CIA (Culinary Institute of America) model blender for just over a month. So far, I am loving it! I have definitely increased my consumption of fruits and vegetables since getting it. I start most mornings off with a smoothie now. I throw in whatever fruit is in season (I love berries, but I've used peaches, nectarines, plums, grapes, apples, bananas and various frozen fruits), a scoop or two of protein powder, milk or water, a couple handfuls of fresh spinach, a couple handfuls of ice and sweetener if needed. Surprisingly, the spinach doesn't noticeably change the flavor, but it does boost the nutritional content of the smoothie. In less than 10 minutes I can have my smoothie made, poured into a "to go" cup and have the machine all clean (just add warm water and a couple drops of dish soap- turn it on for 30 seconds, then empty and rinse the container). The smoothies always turn out 100% smooth- berry seeds, apple seeds, ice and other hard... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth every dime, March 1, 2008

Why, you say, should I spend this insane amount of money for a blender? My answer: Because it's worth it. There is simply no comparison to other blenders. The Vitamix is the best. It really does crush ice effectively, make ice cream in seconds from frozen fruit and cream, and produces drinks and sauces that are utterly smooth, plus soups to die for. I make my own hummus and used it for baby food regularly, guests love it for silky frozen drinks, and it lasts--with zero problems. It's a quality device. Advertising is geared to health food because you can make drinks or soups from fresh produce and take advantage of the natural fiber that juicers take out, and they're right, but that's not why I bought it. I bought it because I hate the odd chunky bits of fruit in my smoothies, I hate taking blenders apart for cleaning and I wanted something I could depend on to do what I wanted each and every time. I've not been disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars How often do you fall in love with a household appliance?, January 11, 2010
I ordered Vitamix 5200, but was upgraded by kitchenuniverse because they were out of it. It's the same machine except for an upgraded book and different color base.

things I can now do (or not do)with my Vitamix:
1. dont have to section oranges or lemons. healthier this way too. (just peel and remove seeds)
2. don't have to peel garlic (healthier? maybe. definitely more whole)
3. don't have to chop carrots (still a good idea to quarter apples)
4. sell my ice cream machine, and juicer
5. make smoothies while baby is asleep in the next room(can go as fast as variable 5 w/out much noise at all, it can still crush ice effortlessly at this speed). Even at the highest speed, it's as noisy as a regular vacuum, and I usually don't need to go full speed for very long anyway. The only time you need to go long (5-7 minutes) is for heating up soup, but why? adding hot water before blending is a greener alternative.
6. make as little as a cup of smoothie at... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars The Leak Problem, July 21, 2007
Customer Video Review Length:: 0:53 Mins

    UPDATED AT BOTTOM!

I have owned a lot of blenders and this one is very impressive. I was tempted to give it 4 stars as it is not the best blender I have ever owned. That distinction goes to the Vita-Mix which has a nuclear reactor for a base, sounds like a Harley and cost as much as a microwave but if you need a blender that can crush anything and make flour and HOT soup....well....but back to the KitchenAid. My spouse could not get over the price though and demanded it be returned.

The KA looks great. As a home chef, having a sleek modern looking kitchen is important. Second it is easy to clean... I will never own a push button (i.e. old Oster-type) blender again. Nor one with a multi piece jar. One leak can and has ruined an evening or party, as you run to grab paper towel and dish clothes to control the margarita or soup that is running across your counter and down your cabinets. Then the fun of cleaning your blender nooks... Read more

This is an excellent, high-quality blender. We replaced an inexpensive Oster with it and like this KitchenAid much, much more. Things I really like:

    1) Power - this blender whips through hard-frozen fruit like nothing is there for wonderful smoothies.
    2) Smooth, one piece control panel - makes for super-easy clean-up as there are no cracks or crevices to trap spills. Yet, the buttons behind the panel still have a nice tactile click response so you know you pressed one.
    3) Brushed nickel finish - very attractive on your counter.
    4) Polycarbonate jar - this worried me when considering this purchase as our old blender had a nice, thick glass jar. But, after using this blender for 3 months, I like this jar better. It is thick, yet lightweight, and hasn't scratched (although I only use rubber or silicone spatulas inside any way).
    5) One piece blades & jar - our old blender had a screw-off base, resulting in 4 parts for clean-up - the base, the blade... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic blender design (and execution), July 22, 2008
This blender replaces a 20 year old Hamilton Beach that finally gave up the ghost (after being abused by my lovely spouse one too many times ;-) ).

I actually purchased the refurbished one direct from KitchenAid for $100.

Out of the box, the pitcher had a small leak, so a thin line of blended goodness and maybe a touch of oil were getting slung around the inside of the base of the pitcher (where the pitcher fits over the base). SOLUTION: Call KitchenAid Customer Service and voila, they are shipping me a new one (they said keep the old, leaky one--I may try to fix it). Now THAT is what I call great customer service.

There is some confusion as to the Watts (power) that this thing has:

    120V x 6A = 720 Watts (the base simply says 120V, 6A motor)
    but
0.9hp * 746W/hp = 671 Watts (the advertised spec on the KitchenAid site has 0.9hp)
    or
650 Watts (according to JC Penny)

Let's call it 700 Watts and move... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have gadget!, January 14, 2008
This review is from: Margaritaville DM2000 Premium Frozen Concoction Maker (Kitchen)
As an engineer and gadget guy I finally got the big Kahuna Margaritaville model.

When you follow the directions - ie keep the right amount of liquid per the number of drinks - it is fantastic. The 12OZ per drink measurement is dead on.

The different drinks it makes - Rita's, Daq's, Colada's and Smoothies are set on one knob. This basically tells the blender how much blending to do and when to shave the ice. The Rita's assume all liquid ingredients. The Daq's assume frozen fruit and the Smoothies assume fresh fruit so the timing and frequecy of the blending is based on that. For example the blender doesn't start on a Rita until the ice shaving is well underway while a Daq starts blending well before the shaving starts.

The machine breaks down nicely for easy cleaning and the shaving blade is easy to replace if it comes to that. It's a pretty beefy blade so I am not worried.

Do note that the machine is tall and will not fit under a cabinet... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Elminates several other machines in your kitchen, August 9, 2007

This review is from: Margaritaville DM2000 Premium Frozen Concoction Maker (Kitchen)
We love our Margaritaville machine! It has eliminated two blenders and a snow cone maker in our own kitchen. No telling what more. My husband loves a good 'rita, and I like to drink health shakes in the morning for breakfast. This machine is perfect for our needs. You can also just shave a little ice to make a snowy soft snow cone for the kids or enlist the blender element solely. It's a large machine, so if a blender is a daily necessity in your house and you have plenty of counter space to accomodate it, then this is great for you. Now, this is not going to chop frozen strawberries w/o compromising the integrity, per the saleswoman's instructions at the Williams-Sonoma that we bought it at. By the way, we bought ours there for the same price, but also have the Williams-Sonoma guarantee that covers the Margaritaville for life. If you have a WS in your area, I would suggest this route. If not, at least Amazon has their 1 yr. warranty on it.

    First, I would rate it a 3.5
I purchased this item as I was tired of low quality drink mixers... I purchased the FIJI as it was the newest model out. It has a larger Ice holder and different settings for margaritas, daquiries, mudslides, and smoothies.
The machine is powerful and seemingly high quality. I feel it will last a long time. It does take some practice getting your recipies correct. Maybe its just me, but I also can NOT differentiate the drinks from the four different settings. A drink in the mudslide setting has the same texture as a Margarita....and etc. So I felt that was a waste for me. With the larger Ice Hopper thats nice, but easily available for the Key West version. I would rather have extra blending Jars as they are small and what I go through the most. The Key west seems to have the best matching ice reservoir for the blending jar. The drip through water catcher is nice... but very difficultt to clean. Its too narrow to wash by hand, you need to use a... Read more
